Denver's Wynkoop Brewing Co. seeks America's greatest beer lover

Once again, Wynkoop Brewing Company is seeking beer resumes from the nation's most beer-minded men and women for its 2013 Beerdrinker of the Year contest. The 17th annual contest seeks and honors America's most passionate, knowledgeable beer lovers and ambassadors.

The Beerdrinker of the Year wins free beer for life at Wynkoop Brewing Company and $250 of beer at their local brewpub or beer bar.

They also win 2013 Beerdrinker of the Year clothing and have their name engraved on the Beerdrinker of the Year trophy at Wynkoop. Plus, they enjoy the lofty acclaim that comes from being named the nation's greatest beer nut.

To enter the contest, applicants must submit beer resumes that include the entrant's beer philosophy and details on their passion for beer and their 2012 beer experiences. Resumes should also detail the entrant's understanding of beer and its history and importance to civilization, along with the entrant's efforts to educate others to the joys of great beer.

Resumes for the Beerdrinker of the Year are reviewed by the nation's beer experts, beer journalists and previous Beerdrinker winners. The top three entrants are flown to Wynkoop Brewing Company (at Wynkoop's expense) for the Beerdrinker of the Year National Finals on February 23, 2013.

At Our Beers of the Year event, one of the two new beers we debuted (and now have on tap) is a unique throwback beer we call The Chancellor. It’s a barrel-aged (for 16 month), single hop/single malt, British super-strong ale of 14% ABV. Brewed by Wynkoop head brewer Andy Brown, the beer is made from a vintage recipe discovered in England and shared with us by one of our heroes, the legendary Terry Foster.

An ex-pat Brit and UK brewing expert and author, Terry literally wrote the book on pale ale for the Brewers Association. His Pale Ale was the first book for the BA’s now very popular Classic styles series, and a tome that schooled many a homebrewer -- and homebrewer turned pro brewer -- on the glories of the nation’s go-to craft beer style. That’s heavy.

“Terry is a quiet pioneer,” Charlie Papazian tells us, “who helped establish the foundation for America’s most well known ale, pale ale.”

As for The Chancellor, it has a very unique, 80-years-old backstory. To get the details on it we conducted a Q & A with the legendary beer writer and discoverer of the beer’s recipe. Enjoy.

On December 1, 1-4 PM, Wynkoop Brewing Company presents our annual Parade of Darks, our holiday fundraiser and showcase of seasonal and year-round beers in the amber-to-opaque color categories.

The event features a gift list of perfect-for-cool-weather beers -- from holiday seasonals, barley wines, sours and Belgians to porters, stouts and more -- for sampling. There will also be of selection of cheeses and chocolates to accompany the beers.

Wynkoop donates 100% of the money from ticket sales to Metro CareRing (MCR), a downtown Denver food pantry that's experiencing another record year of demand for its services. Participating, big-hearted breweries are donating their time and beers to join the cause. Wonderful!

On October 8, at 5 PM, Wynkoop Brewing Company will tap the first keg of a brand new and immensely unique Wynkoop beer: Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout

Yes, the beer was inspired by our April Fools spoof video this spring, in which we claimed to have released a beer made with bull testicles.

Why actually make such a meaty treat? Months after doing the video (the idea for which hit me while sampling Odell Brewing’s recent and very delicious oyster stout for Jax restaurants), we and our fans are still laughing. Very important, that laughing.

We’ve also met folks around the country who saw the spoof and loved it. (Hello Hawaii!)

Plus, when we sent out the press release and the video link last April, we heard from brewers and beer writers who thought the beer was for real and loved the idea. They wanted samples. So did many patrons who came to the pub to try the beer.

We've just scored a wonderful feature in the Denver Post, it chronicles our efforts in expanding the Wynkoop beer list and blazing new beer trails.

Wynkoop Brewing Co. in Denver pushing boundaries

The greater experimentation is part of a movement by long-established craft breweries to win over the growing number of more sophisticated beer drinkers and ward off megabreweries moving in on their turf.

"We have a pretty enviable position of being the founding Colorado brewpub," Brown said. "But our industry is changing fast. We know we can't be an old dog learning new tricks. We need to be authentically committed to being adventurous and changing."

For the past year or so we’ve been dreaming of new tap handles for the spots that carry draft Wynkoop beer. Yes, we’ve outgrown our classic, ceramic, British pub style handles.

But our search for a maker of those new handles brought us to a surprising realization: it seems every tap handle in America is made overseas, outside of the US.

As a small-batch liquid art maker that sells its art locally – and encourages our retailers to support such an outfit – that wouldn’t fly with us. We gotta walk the talk of our “buy local” mantra, right?

Tuesday, October 9th from 5-9pm at Wynkoop Brewing (1634 18th St. in Denver), Wynkoop is hosting the Denver debut of Beers Made By Walking.

Beers Made By Walking is a program started by Colorado Springs art professor Eric Steen that invites brewers to make beer inspired by nature hikes and urban walks. “Along the hike,” Steen says, “the brewers identify edible and medicinal plants and use them as ingredients in special beers. Each walk is different and each beer is a drinkable landscape portrait of that walk.”

Back for its third year, our Belgium-meets-Colorado IPA hits the taps at Wynkoop and a select few of Denver's beeriest spots starting September 1. Belgorado is built with 95% Colorado-grown ingredients including the beer's base malts and 75 pounds per batch of fresh, locally grown hops. All fermented with a Belgian yeast.

The beer is lusciously balanced with pale malt flavors, spice notes and layers of hops. It features 6.7% ABV, 50 IBUs, 95 OMGs. The beer (we're happy to recall) was a 2011 Great American Beer Festival bronze medalist in the Experimental Beer category.

This year we're doing the beer in three batches, each with wet/fresh hops from a different Colorado hop farm. (Come in, terroir seekers.)
