His “warm & flat is where it’s at” credo was a cheeky mantra for us in our early days.
Russell was also a character in the true sense of the word, a man with swagger, big ideas, staunch opinions and serious sense of cool and style. He lived life in a big way.
Sadly Russell died in 1996 at the very young age of 38 years old, from a head injury suffered in a fall.
In recognition of Russell’s efforts, the Brewers Association’s annual accolade for brewing advancements is called the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation. It was first awarded in 1997 and its recipients include some of our trade’s finest brewers and innovators.
We raise a glass of Wynkoop beer in Russell’s honor and memory, and we thank him for his hefty contributions to Wynkoop Brewing Company and the nation’s craft beer movement.
