On December 1, 1-4 PM, Wynkoop Brewing Company presents our annual Parade of Darks, our holiday fundraiser and showcase of seasonal and year-round beers in the amber-to-opaque color categories.

The event features a gift list of perfect-for-cool-weather beers -- from holiday seasonals, barley wines, sours and Belgians to porters, stouts and more -- for sampling. There will also be of selection of cheeses and chocolates to accompany the beers.

Wynkoop donates 100% of the money from ticket sales to Metro CareRing (MCR), a downtown Denver food pantry that's experiencing another record year of demand for its services. Participating, big-hearted breweries are donating their time and beers to join the cause. Wonderful!

At Our Beers of the Year event, one of the two new beers we debuted (and now have on tap) is a unique throwback beer we call The Chancellor. It’s a barrel-aged (for 16 month), single hop/single malt, British super-strong ale of 14% ABV. Brewed by Wynkoop head brewer Andy Brown, the beer is made from a vintage recipe discovered in England and shared with us by one of our heroes, the legendary Terry Foster.

An ex-pat Brit and UK brewing expert and author, Terry literally wrote the book on pale ale for the Brewers Association. His Pale Ale was the first book for the BA’s now very popular Classic styles series, and a tome that schooled many a homebrewer -- and homebrewer turned pro brewer -- on the glories of the nation’s go-to craft beer style. That’s heavy.

“Terry is a quiet pioneer,” Charlie Papazian tells us, “who helped establish the foundation for America’s most well known ale, pale ale.”

As for The Chancellor, it has a very unique, 80-years-old backstory. To get the details on it we conducted a Q & A with the legendary beer writer and discoverer of the beer’s recipe. Enjoy.
